On Saturday, September 2, tens of thousands of smiles made DC’s beatuiful Yards Park shine all day despite the rain at DC VegFest 2017!
A fun-loving crowd of 15,000-20,000 people joined Compassion Over Killing at our free DC VegFest to explore the joys of vegan eating. DC VegFest 2017 featured free food samples; renowned celebrity speakers; more than 115 vendors, exhibitors, and nonprofits; an activity-packed Kids’ Zone; live music; and so much more!
Our Emcee, vegan rapper Grey, kicked the fun off on the Main Stage, and kept the crowd pumped up all day long with energetic performances, including his viral hit “Vegan Thanksgiving”…watch here!
Sensational Speakers: Grey introduced our inspiring celebrity keynote speakers who wowed the crowd, including:
- David Carter (former NFL player and “The 300-Pound Vegan)
- Representative Jamie Raskin (US Congressman)
- Dr. Ruby Lathon (holistic nutritionist, wellness expert)
- Kathy Stevens (Founder, Catskill Animal Sanctuary)
Culinary Creations: But wait, there was more Main Stage fun! Celeb chefs whipped up mouthwatering meatless meals in cooking demos, also inviting the audience to try their creations: vegan mozzarella, tacos, cookies & more!
- Miyoko Schinner (chef, author, Founder/CEO of Miyoko’s Kitchen)
- Eddie Garza (Senior Mgr. of Food & Nutrition, HSUS; author of “¡Salud! Vegan Mexican Cookbook”);
- Doron Petersan (owner of DC’s Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats and FareWell, Cookbook Author)
Family Fun: The DC VegFest truly has something for everyone, from dog-friendly fun to our Kids’ Zone, which this year included a hands-on cooking demo by Compassion Over Killing’s own Jessica Carter; a popular Ask-A-Vegan-Parent Panel; storytime, music, yoga, and even a moonbounce.
Thyme for Tunes: In our Music Tent, the live songs of Norm Hogeland, Steve Gellman, and Buntopia entertained VegFest-goers as they ate their delicious vegan foods.
Food and Fun: Did someone mention food? There was plenty to enjoy at DC VegFest 2017: Food vendors included Vegan Treats, Roots Market, Busboys and Poets, Treeline Treenut Cheese, MOM’s Organic Market, and more — many of whom served up free samples!
DC VegFest-goers also browsed booths by commercial exhibitors like Dr. Bronner’s, The Stanford Inn by the Sea, Dr. Ruby’s Organics, and Plant Based Drippin, and non-profit exhibitors including A Well-Fed Word, FARM, Veg Society of DC, Proveg International, Mothers Against Dairy, and more.
