On October 3rd, more than 10,000 people joined us to celebrate the many joys of vegan eating at our 7th annual DC VegFest in the nation’s capital. Despite some rain and cloudy weather, the crowds were shining with smiles as they began lining up two hours early to get a free, fully-loaded commemorative tote bag!
Kicking off the event with a warm and energetic welcome was our special guest emcee Jane Velez-Mitchell who kept the main stage in motion all day. Keynote speakers included NFL player David Carter (aka the 300-lb vegan), ultra athlete Rich Roll with his wife Chef Julie Piatt, Kate Jacoby and Rich Landau from the award-winning restaurant Vedge, public health specialist Dr. Aysha Akhtar, Farm Sanctuary’s Gene Baur, and DJ Cavem and Alkemia Earth who hosted a hip hop culinary concert (pictured above).
This incredible energy was felt around the festival — from the main stage, to the music tent with live performances throughout the day, to the kids’ activity area which also featured speakers, cooking demos, and story time, and so much more.
More than 120 vendors offered festival-goers an endless opportunity to explore — from enjoying free food samples by Tofurky, Daiya, Nature’s Path, and Treeline to satisfying sweet tooth cravings at Vegan Treats, Sticky Fingers, and Better Batch to picking up some great animal-friendly products from Dr. Bronner’s, Herbivore Clothing, and Cocoally — and so much more!
In addition to generating excitement and interest in vegan eating from over 10,000 attendees, the DC VegFest also generating extensive media coverage before, during, and after the event, including feature stories on ABC-7 Good Morning Washington, Fox-5 Good Day DC, and News-8 Let’s Talk Live as well as coverage in the Washington Post, Washington City Paper, and Washington Life.
